As an artistically inclined teen in the 90's, I was always dreaming up my own video game ideas and drawing characters and settings for them. When Mario Kart 64 came along, and other game series did their best to clone it, I'm sure I wasn't the only nerd to envision my own characters taking to the track in high speed 3D glory. 20+ years later, that dream has come true! Sort of.

Chubbit was not one of those old characters, and we have not made a kart racing game, but an old piece of fan art from the Miiverse days put the idea in our heads, and Rotund Rebound's mini-games seemed like the perfect place to bring the concept to life.

We weren't sure exactly what sort of racing mini-game to make at first. Then we hit on the idea of a Mode 7 inspired approach, and got really excited about the possibilities. We knew we had to make it work, and we did!

Kart mini-game aside, the past month's efforts have been split between advancing Rotund Rebound's development and trying to spread the word about it. The latter hasn't seen much success yet, but we're still trying. Participating in the Steam Game Festival was technically worth the time and effort put in, but only barely. We're hoping to get into a couple other curated events where we won't be lost among 900+ other games. We'll see if that goes anywhere.

Anyway, just wanted to drop a quick update and share some fun pictures. For more frequent and in-depth reports, hop on into our Discord!

So, there's a special awkwardness that comes from shouting about your game when the world is proverbially on fire, and we'd like to address that.

With The Steam Game Festival approaching (originally scheduled for June 9th), we had a lot to do and wanted it done in advance, aiming for June 1st. Not only the Rotund Rebound demo itself, but assets like its website and trailer, a Discord for demo players to come to, Rotund Zero to play and discuss while waiting for the full game's release, and materials for the press.

Preparing all of this was a huge task involving extra long hours and no days off for two weeks straight, which left us a little out of the loop on what was happening out in the wider world. Had we had a better grip on things (and had we known Steam would delay the festival), we definitely would have postponed things ourselves. Bad timing.

Amidst all of this turmoil, we've been uncertain what Dahku might do to take definitive supportive action. With no games currently for sale, a lack of financial reserves, and about as much social presence as a pebble in a parking lot, it seems Dahku as a company can't do much of anything. But we have, as individuals, donated to help the Black Lives Matter cause, and the spirit of our tiny studio stands with them in the fight for equality and basic human rights.

We would also like to applaud other studios who have stepped up to do what they can, specifically those who have added their games to bundles to raise money for social justice. We encourage all gamers to grab these and help the world become a better place!

This spring and summer are packed with digital gaming events, and we're excited to announce that Rotund Rebound will be joining in The Steam Game Festival, Summer Edition! You'll have the chance to play a Rotund Rebound demo, available only for the duration of the festival, June 16th through 22nd.

The demo will feature a fun chunk of the adventure's first world, and it's open-ended so you can return to levels to grab things you may have missed, or set new records. The demo also measures progress independently of the full game, so you can take your file to 100%.

This is the first time ever that the public will be able to get their hands on the game, and we're very excited (and a bit apprehensive) to see how it's received. Mark your calendars and be sure to drop by our Discord after you've played to let us know what you thought!

[Box Art]

Today begins an exciting new chapter for Rotund Rebound. We've got several big announcements to cover, so let's jump into it!

Nintendo Switch Boards The Platforms!

[Nintendo Switch]

This should come as no surprise after previous teases, but as childhood Nintendo fans we're super excited to confirm that Rotund Rebound will be coming to Nintendo Switch! We're aiming for a simultaneous release alongside Steam and Xbox One.

Going Official With New Media!

Things are fast picking up for Rotund Rebound, and in that spirit we've released a new announcement trailer! Technically the game was softly announced in 2018 and has had an "early teaser" trailer for about a year, but we're well past that stage. Time to put our best foot forward with official gameplay footage!

Other new media includes that snazzy box art at the top of this post and refreshed screenshots. You can now find those and everything Rotund Rebound at rotundrebound.com, a sleek new hub for the game.

Rotund Rebound Is On Discord!

For Rotund Rebound we'd really like to encourage a fun and helpful community centered around friendly competition, video sharing and strat discussion. We've also been wanting a way to deliver some fun exclusive content straight to those who want it. We're honestly pretty new to the whole Discord thing, but it seems like a perfect fit for these goals. Hope to see you there!

Rotund Zero Available Now!

We've teased a GameBoy-styled Rotund game a couple times, and here it is at last!

Rotund Zero features precision platforming on a 5-minute countdown, uniquely dynamic gameplay through randomly shuffled handcrafted levels, and a retro handheld-inspired world of weirdness!

Rotund Rebound won't be finished for awhile yet, so what better way to kick off our Discord-exclusive content than with something fun to play and discuss in the meantime? It's FREE on Windows, macOS, and Linux, so come on into the server and get your download key!

In these dark times, a lot of game devs are showing their quality by joining in sales, holding special events, giving games away for free to those who could really use them right now, and so on. It's inspiring to see, and we'd like to join in the effort by... doing... uh, something.

...

Yeah. When you're still developing what's essentially your debut title, there really isn't much to offer the world in its time of crisis. But if you're excited for or interested in Rotund Rebound and its corpulent critters, maybe an open and verbose update on how things are going will bring you a bit of joyful distraction. It's really all we have just now (and it's long overdue as it is), so here we go!
